Brass: Timeless Metal Craftsmanship & Bespoke Brass Design

At FRD Designers & Makers, brass isn’t just a material, it’s a story told through light, form and finish. With decades of experience crafting furniture, lighting and architectural metalwork from brass and other metals, our Dorset workshop transforms this remarkable alloy into pieces that elevate interiors and endure through time.

A Short History of Brass

Brass has a long and distinguished history in the UK, closely tied to craftsmanship, industry and architecture. While brass was known in Roman Britain, used for coins, decorative fittings and small domestic objects, its widespread use grew significantly from the 17th century onwards, when advances in metalworking made production more consistent and accessible.

By the Georgian and Victorian eras, brass had become a defining material in British interiors and public buildings. It was widely used for lighting fixtures, furniture fittings, door furniture, stair details and decorative metalwork, valued for its durability, warm colour and ability to be finely worked. Victorian Britain, in particular, embraced brass in everything from grand chandeliers and furniture mounts to railway fittings and maritime hardware.

During the Industrial Revolution, UK foundries and workshops refined brass production further, supplying architectural metalwork and lighting for townhouses, hotels, theatres and civic buildings. Its corrosion resistance also made it a practical choice for use in coastal and industrial environments.

While Brass does sometimes present its own set of challenges, for example welding it can be tricky as the zinc burns out at a lower temperature.  These challenges are often the very details that makes every piece so unique.  It is malleable, solders well, joins easily and is a dream to work with on a machine.

Today, brass continues to hold a special place in British design, prized not only for its heritage associations but for its versatility in contemporary interiors. At FRD Designers & Makers, this tradition of British metal craftsmanship lives on, with brass lighting, furniture and bespoke brass pieces made using time-honoured techniques alongside modern design thinking.

Why Brass Matters in Design

Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, is uniquely suited to design because of its warm tones, strength and ability to take a finish beautifully.  Brass can be shaped, textured, plated, polished, patinated and finished in a spectrum of ways and colour variations to suit styles from contemporary minimalism to classic heritage interiors.

Brass’s natural colour ranges from soft honey to rich gold, and it responds artistically to light and ageing, developing a patina, a subtle surface transformation that adds depth and character over time. This patina isn’t a flaw; it’s a feature that many designers and homeowners actively seek.

Brass Lighting: From Function to Feature

Lighting is where brass truly shines, both literally and figuratively. Whether in statement pendants, sleek wall lights or bespoke chandeliers, brass brings warmth and sophistication to any space. Take, for example, handcrafted brass pendants with an aged or brushed brass finish, these pieces cast a warming, inviting glow, creating ambience while showcasing the nuanced tones of the metal.

Other contemporary and artisan brass lighting designs, such as ones combining brass elements with textured glass, demonstrate how the material works with other surfaces to add visual richness and tactile appeal. At FRD Designers & Makers, brass lighting pieces are made to order, with finishes tailored to each vision, from polished statement pieces to softly patinated classics that sit beautifully within bespoke interiors.

Brass Furniture: Structure Meets Elegance

Brass furniture isn’t just about looks, it’s about substance. The material’s durability and versatility make it an excellent choice for furniture frames, detail work and bespoke pieces that become centrepieces in a room.

Brass-framed tables, benches and metal furniture components crafted by FRD blend structural integrity with aesthetic warmth. Whether paired with wood, stone, glass or upholstered surfaces, brass introduces a refined metallic accent that elevates overall design.

Exploring Brass Finishes & Patina

One of brass’s most compelling qualities is its ability to wear and age with grace.

Polished Brass – High shine and reflective. Ideal for classic or high-end interiors where a gleaming, luxurious touch is desired.
Brushed or Satin Brass – Soft sheen with understated elegance. Excellent for contemporary lighting and furniture details.
Antique & Aged Brass – Rich, darker tones with depth. These finishes evoke heritage and add visual warmth, often achieved through controlled patination or chemical ageing.
Patinated Brass – Natural or applied texture. Patina can range from gentle amber hues to deeper aged looks, offering bespoke character and design authenticity.

Patina itself develops as brass reacts with its environment, a natural process that creates unique, protective surface layers. Designers often choose finishes that encourage this evolution, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind.

At FRD Designers & Makers we describe one popular finish as “Once Loved Brass”; a particular quality we achieve that looks as if the brass was once looked after, but then left over time, eventually forgotten.  In turn it is a brass finish that looks naturally aged, full of character and steeped in history.

For centuries interiors have celebrated brass for its warmth, versatility and character. From industrial minimalism to refined heritage, brass adds a tactile luxury to any interior that complements wood, marble, textiles and glass. Its ability to age beautifully makes it a favourite in spaces designed to be lived in.

At FRD Designers & Makers, brass is more than a material, it’s the foundation for pieces that bridge our unique metal craftsmanship and contemporary design, custom-made to a client’s vision from concept to completion. With decades working alongside designers, architects and clients worldwide, we bring brass to life in ways both timeless and tailored.
